St. Joseph's School, Rapogi is named after the big rock about 100m from the school. The rock is believed to be granite upon which implements were sharpened. In fact, the school's motto "Sharpening for the future" emanates from this.
The school was started in 1962 by the Catholic Church through the Utrecht Brothers' Society of the Netherlands (Holland).
The first batch of Form One students were admitted to the present day Cardinal Otunga High School before moving to the present site in 1963. The first principal was Rev. Fr. Masai and the first African Principal was Mr. Charles Shikuku.
In 2012, the school celebrated its Golden Jubilee.
In 2004, the school topped Nyanza region in KCSE with a mean of 9.503, putting it number 15 nationally, while in 2011 the school attained its highest mean ever (10.0524).
Today, the school has 15 streams in Form One, 12 streams in Form Two, while Form Three and Form Four have 9 streams
